Twenty years ago, Samuel Huntington published his game-changing book The Clash of Civilizations. A Jan. 8, 2016, analysis by Stratfor correspondent Eugene Chausovsky shows that the book is as relevant now as it was in 1996. While Huntington got many forecasts about the post–Cold War era wrong, he got a fair few right—as we’ll see.

Replicants of Bombay
Jeet Thayil. Narcopolis. London; Faber & Faber, 2012. 292 pp. Jeet Thayil’s debut novel Narcopolis is the book that coulda-shoulda won the Man Booker Prize for 2012. Instead, the prize, announced last week, went to Hilary Mantel’s book on Oliver Cromwell, Bring up the Bodies. Thayil, the longest shot, would have made for a more sensational, media-grabbing winner than the widely admired, almost- mediumistic novel by Mantel.
Homeland (In)Security
Recently in a Moscow court, a Russian oligarch ignored the cage surrounding him and spoke with a canary’s glee. imprisoned in a Siberian gulag since 2005—dazzled the courtroom with his showman’s flair when, in self-defense, he produced a jar of crude oil. Using this prop, he mocked the charge that he had stolen oil from Russia by ridiculing the concept of ownership itself.
